Soil organic carbon dynamics in typical durum wheat-based crop rotations of Southern Italy

Abstract: Mediterranean agricultural areas are dominated by cropping systems based on winter cereals crops, summer irrigated crops, foragebased systems, and mixed succession with bare fallow. Soil organic carbon (SOC) is widely used to assess the environmental performance of these cropping systems, since it is strongly influenced by management practices and environmental conditions. This study evaluates the sustainability of representative intensive cropping systems of Southern Italy, in terms of SOC stock changes and C… Show more

“…Its characteristics are presented in Table 1 [47][48][49]. The spatial and the temporal dimensions of the dataset are capable of incorporating the climatic trends of the selected area [50,51]. Table 2 provides us with some information about the number of grid points inside agricultural areas according to Corine land cover classification nomenclature [52], as a measure of the cultivated land per country.…”

“…The study site is located in the Foggia Province (Southern Italy, Apulia region, CREA experimental field, 41 • 27 57.3 N, 15 • 30 19.8 E, Thermo-Mediterranean climate), where mean annual temperature and rainfall of 15.8 • C and 529 mm, respectively, are typically recorded (Di Bene et al, 2016;Castellini et al, 2019). Here, a long-term field experiment (1.2 ha) was established in 1995, aiming to monitor long-term effect of tillage and no-tillage management on durum wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp.…”
