Soil biological properties are important for the stabilization and preservation of a good soil structure. Management practices can affect the diversity and population of microorganisms, which could beneficially change soil properties and promote a more sustainable dryland crop production. This study was established near Pontotoc, MS, USA (34°07′ N, 88°59′ W) on an Atwood silt loam (fine-silty, mixed, semiactive, thermic Typic Paleudalf) to evaluate the impacts of cover crops, planting dates and fertilizer sources (poultry litter, inorganic fertilizer and no fertilizer) on selected biologically related soil properties in a no-tillage, dryland soybean production. Soil analyses included total carbon and nitrogen, permanganate oxidizable carbon (POXC), easily extractable glomalin-related soil protein (EE-GRSP), water stable aggregate (WSA) and soil pH. Cover crop production and soybean yield were also determined. The results indicated that the fertilizer source had an impact on total nitrogen, EE-GRSP and soybean yield. Total N was 6% higher with poultry litter at the early planting date compared to no fertilizer (control) (p < 0.0018) and at the late planting date, when total N and EE-GRSP were increased by 11% and 13%, respectively, with poultry litter compared to no fertilizer. Additionally, soil pH was reduced by 0.25 units in the poultry litter-amended treatment. Soybean yield was increased by 68% and 51% in early-planted soybean and 42% and 40% in late-planted soybean with poultry litter and inorganic fertilizer, respectively, compared to no fertilizer. This study revealed that biological soil properties and soybean yield were influenced by poultry litter application. The results showed no significant effects of cover crops over the short time period of the study.

Multi-disturbance identification from mine wind-velocity data based on MSSW and WPT-GBDT

To overcome the false alarm problem that arises for mine wind-velocity sensors due to air-door and mine-car operation, a wind-velocity disturbance identification method based on the wavelet packet transform and gradient lifting decision tree is proposed. In this method, a multi-scale sliding window discretizes continuous wind-velocity monitoring data, the wavelet packet transform extracts the hidden features of discrete data, and a gradient lifting decision tree multi-disturbance classification model is established. Based on the overlap degree rule, the disturbance identification results are merged, modified, combined, and optimized. In accordance with a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression, the air-door operation information is further extracted. A similarity experiment is performed to verify the method performance. For the disturbance identification task, the recognition accuracy, accuracy, and recall of the proposed method are 94.58%, 95.70% and 92.99%, respectively, and for the task involving further extraction of disturbance information related to air-door operation, those values are 72.36%, 73.08%, and 71.02%, respectively. This algorithm gives a new recognition method for abnormal time series data.

Properties of Self-curing High Strength Concrete by using Baby Polymer Diapers

This study investigates the self-curing concrete using baby polymer diapers as substitute method of curing process in order to improve mechanical and physical properties of concrete. Three different proportion of baby polymer diapers which are 1%, 3% and 5% were mix with concrete. Slump, compressive strength and drying shrinkage test were performed in order to study the workability, strength and durability of the concrete. All concrete were tested for 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days for drying shrinkage test. Meanwhile, all concrete were test at 3, 7 and 28 days for compressive strength test. Compressive strength of concrete containing 5% baby polymer diapers show the highest strength at 28 days compared to others percentage. Thus, it indicates that application of baby polymer diaper as self-cure agent can improve the concrete performances.
