Sol–gel coatings: An alternative route for producing planar optical waveguides

Abstract: Inorganic and hybrid planar waveguides with different compositions (silica-titania, methacrylate-silica-cerium oxide, zirconia-cerium oxide and silica-zirconia) have been obtained by sol-gel synthesis followed by dip-coating. Soda-lime glass slides and conventional commercial window glass were used as substrates. The thickness and refractive index of the coatings were determined by profilometry and Spectroscopic Ellipsometry. Waveguide efficiency was measured at ca. 70% with a He-Ne laser beam, coupled with an… Show more

“…The stability question raised by organic polymer waveguides has led to the investigation of inorganic glasses (e.g. silica-zirconia and silica-titania) [70] and organic-inorganic hybrids [18] as potential alternatives as waveguides. While pure glass waveguides have a high refractive index, their weight and fragility limits their useful application in building integrated photovoltaics.…”

“…Several new materials and composites such as poly(lactic acid), unsaturated polyester, sol‐gel glasses like silica‐zirconia and silica‐titania, and organic–inorganic hybrids such as polysiloxanes, silsesquioxanes, and di‐urethane‐silica have been proposed as potential alternatives to PMMA. Among these, the organic–inorganic hybrids are particularly attractive due to their ability to simultaneously exhibit properties of both components such as easy processability, tunability, and mechanical stability .…”

“…. The microstructure and properties of sol‐gel coatings depend on the synthesis parameters . In particular, TiO 2 , SiO 2 , and ZrO 2 containing films have been successfully prepared by sol‐gel for different applications, including photocatalytic, anticorrosion, or scratch resistance coatings.…”
