In the context of targets that we need to reach in order to curb the climate change, this research aims to understand if renewable energy has ability to meet the current energy demands. To determine this, a downtown area identified by the Toronto 2030 Platform was simulated by estimating rooftop PVs, considering six building typologies. The result from this simulation gave an overview of the energy generation potential in the City of Toronto. Four basic steps were followed to complete this study: first was to select six representative building-type communities; simulating those communities for their annual energy production; estimating annual energy production by PV modules within the selected area and, finally, suggesting strategies to achieve a Net-Zero energy neighborhoods. The methodology adopted for this study can be used as template for estimating PV modules energy production in other areas of the city.

This review paper provides a summary of methods in which artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been applied in the management of variable renewable energy (VRE) systems, and an outlook to future directions of research in the field. The VRE types included are namely solar, wind and marine varieties. AI techniques, and particularly machine learning (ML), have gained traction as a result of data explosion, and offer a method for integration of multimodal data for more accurate forecasting in energy applications. The VRE management aspects in which AI techniques have been applied include optimized power generation forecasting and integration of VRE into power grids, including the aspects of demand forecasting, energy storage, system optimization, performance monitoring, and cost management. Future directions of research in the applications of AI for VRE management are proposed and discussed, including the issue of data availability, types and quality, in addition to explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), quantum artificial intelligence (QAI), coupling AI with the emerging digital twins technology, and natural language processing.

Solar‐driven steam generation by heat localization has proven to be one of the most promising technologies for broad water‐related applications to relieve global water shortage and pollution due to the excellent interfacial water evaporation ability demonstrated both experimentally and theoretically. However, a constant 1 sun is barely available in practical, fluctuations on solar energy intermittently invalidate conventional solar evaporator, leave a challenge on sustaining efficient thermal evaporation. Herein, we report a mitigating‐solar‐fluctuation hybrid gel material (MHG) with chemical integrating of phase change material to achieve efficient steam generation under solar fluctuations. By storing solar energy when it is surplus and providing thermal energy to sustain evaporation when it is insufficient, the MHGs solar evaporator under solar fluctuations achieves optimized water evaporation rate of 1.7±0.02 kg m‐2 h‐1 for the high period of 0.8 sun and 1.3±0.06 kg m‐2 h‐1 for the low period of 0.5 sun. The MHGs also exhibits outstanding solar desalination performance with good stability, and demonstrates an effective brine desalination during round‐the‐clock desalination process with an average high evaporation rate of 1.24 kg m‐2 h‐1 d‐1. This new material design provides a feasible strategy for solar evaporator to mitigate damage from solar fluctuations.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
