This work presents the conversion of a photovoltaic water pumping system (PVWPS) to its corresponding battery-based solution, while maintaining the components of the PVWPS facility and adding the power converter needed to manage the operation of a lithium-ion battery. A complete analysis of the direct PVWPS is performed based on the values obtained by the monitoring system developed for the installation. The efficiencies and performance ratios of the various elements of the facility are calculated, as well as other relevant factors (such as irradiance thresholds). The dependence of some variables on the solar resource is analyzed to model the system. A similar study is carried out in the battery-based solution and a comparative analysis of the two modes of operation is then performed to find which aspects could be improved in the battery-based solution to increase the pumping time and total daily pumped volume. The results presented demonstrate the benefits of including a battery (reduction in start/stop cycles and improved performance on cloudy days). Aspects that can be improved to make the battery-based solution more efficient and achieve better results are suggested.INDEX TERMS Photovoltaic water pumping systems, lithium batteries, battery-based pumping, water pumping, stand-alone photovoltaic system, sustainable development goals.

Burning fossil fuel like coal, diesel, and so on, for electricity generation is environmentally hazardous and cause increased CO 2 emissions worldwide. To meet the ever-growing energy demand, solar energy remains top and considered to be most promising one that grabbed global attention recently, especially, in the areas of rural electrification and water pumping. Moreover, the solar photovoltaic (PV) system is advantageous and highly preferred. Thus, this paper attempts to review various components of solar-powered water-pumping systems, its configuration, characteristics, and performance. Also, comparison of water-pumping system with and without maximum power point tracking (MPPT), motor and pumps selection based on water flow rate, optimal converter selection, and effective controller performance is studied. Furthermore, PV pumps behavioral study at various geographical locations is also made. Critical analysis on PV water pumping with limitation and suggestions is also highlighted. Hence, it is envisaged that the data presented in this review paper will be useful to the researchers in the selection of suitable PV techniques, pumps, motors, MPPT, and controllers for the effective design, control, and better performance of solar water-pumping system.

With proper management, the modernization of irrigation systems makes it possible to improve the efficiency of application and use of water at the cost of an increase in pumping needs and, therefore, an increment of the energy consumed. The recent drastic price increase for energy put the viability of many farms at risk. In this context, using photovoltaic solar energy to power pumping stations has become an increasingly attractive alternative and a cheap and reliable option. The dimensioning of pumping systems powered by photovoltaic solar energy must be done considering the variability of solar radiation to take advantage of the available photovoltaic energy, especially during periods of less irradiation. By investigating a particular case, this paper studies the effect of increasing the number of pumps in parallel while maintaining the total power, as well as the relationship between the installed photovoltaic capacity and the power of the pumping system, to meet pumping requirements throughout the year. The pumped volume increased as the number of pumps installed in parallel increased for the same photovoltaic power generator. Although this increment has a limit, beyond which no greater significant rise in volume is achieved, installation costs increase. In addition, for the same pumping power installed, the required photovoltaic generator power decreases as the number of pumps in parallel increases. In the case studied, a 27% increase in the annual pumped volume was achieved by incrementing the number of pumps in parallel from one to five, thus leading to a 44.1% reduction in the size of the photovoltaic generator and a 13.3% reduction in the cost of installation compared with a system with only one pump. The procedure used to determine the most appropriate number of pumps to install in parallel when pumping water between two tanks, which minimizes the photovoltaic generator's size while guaranteeing pumping requirements, is easily generalizable for sizing isolated photovoltaic water pumping systems.
