Abstract:In this work, a simple flow injection system incorporating a microcolumn of immobilized dithizone on bentonite coated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide was combined with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) for on-line separation/preconcentration and determination of trace amounts of silver in water. Dithizone was physically immobilized on the surfactant coated bentonite particles and was used as the adsorbent in the preparation of microcolumn. Silver ions were deposited by processing a standard or sample solution of analyte in the pH range of 3-9 through the microcolumn. Injection of 250 µL of thiourea (0.4 mol L −1 , pH = 5.0) served to elute the retained species to the FAAS. The capacity of the adsorbent under working conditions was found to be 7.2 mg of silver per gram of adsorbent. Processing a water sample volume of 30 mL resulted in an enrichment factor of 116. The method was successfully applied to the determination of silver in different natural waters and a certified reference material.

A simple, reliable and rapid method for pre-concentration and determination of ultra-trace zinc using octadecyl silica membrane disk modified by a new Schiff base ligand, and flame atomic absorption spectrometry is presented. Various parameters including, pH of aqueous solution, flow rates, the amount of ligand and type of stripping solvents were optimized. The breakthrough volume is greater than 1000 mL with an enrichment factor of more than 200 and 120 ng/L detection limit. The capacity of the membrane disks modified by 8 mg of the ligand was found to be 260 µg of zinc. The effects of various cationic interferences on percent recovery of zinc ion were studied. The method was successfully applied for the determination of zinc ion in different samples, especially determination of ultra-trace amount of zinc in waters and plants. ABSTRACT.A novel method using a packed column with perlite as a new sorbent has been developed for preconcentration of trace amounts of zinc and cadmium prior to their determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Several factors that may be affected on the solid phase extraction (SPE) process, such as pH, sample volume, flow rate, volume and concentration of eluent were studied and optimized. Linearity was maintained between 0.001-0.1 µg mL −1 for zinc, and 0.001-0.3 µg mL −1 for cadmium. Detection limits based on 3Sb for zinc and cadmium were 1.8 and 1.6 ng mL −1 , respectively. The relative standard deviations of eight replicate measurements of 0.02 µg mL −1 of zinc and 0.05 µg mL −1 of cadmium ions were 2.1% and 1.8%, respectively. Finally, the developed method was successfully applied to extraction and determination of the zinc and cadmium ions in the water and food samples and satisfactory results were obtained.
