Solid-State Binding Studies of Group 2 Metal Ions with 12-Crown-4Dedicated to Professor Joachim Strähle on the Occasion of his 65thBirthday

Abstract: The mode of co-ordination of 12-crown-4 with the heavier group(II) ions Ca 2ϩ , Sr 2ϩ and Ba 2ϩ has been studied. Size limitations of the 12-crown-4 ligand enforced co-ordinated metal ions to reside above the macrocyclic plane, with the remaining coordination sphere occupied by water molecules and/or counter anions, or a second crown ether ligand to form a sandwich type

“…There are a few systems where crystallographic data exist for the same ligand associated with different metal ions. For example, Smith 71 studied the complexes formed between some of the second row metals and 12-crown-4. He found that while the O-Sr 2+ -O angle in the crown ether complex was 62.61, that of O-Ca 2+ -O was 65.81.…”

“…A previously published divalent europium structure ([Eu(12c4)(OH 2 ) 3 Cl]Cl), 22 while not entirely analogous to the trans halide half-sandwich motif, was measured via single-crystal X-ray diffraction at both room temperature and 100 K and is included in Table S11. The metal oxygen bond lengths and distance between the metal and the 12-crown-4 cavity centroid for Ln(12c4)(THF) 2 I 2 are dramatically longer than those of [Ln(12c4)(Cl) 2 (OH 2 ) 2 ]Cl (Ln = Ho−Lu), 18 comparable to that of [Eu(12c4)(Cl)-(OH 2 ) 3 ][Cl], 22 and smaller than [Ba(12c4)(X) 2 (OH 2 )] (X − = Br − , I − ), 28 as would be expected based on the trends in the metals' ionic radii.…”
