This paper deals with the thermal degradation and fire performance of silicone‐based coatings for protecting steel. In this study, the fire performance of silicone coatings as virgin or formulated materials is evaluated using two homemade fire testing methodologies: one similar to the “torch test” fire testing method and the other using a heat radiator test. It was shown that the performance of the silicone‐based coating used as thermal barrier can be improved incorporating a modifier (a mixture of polydimethylsiloxane and silica coated by a silane). In this case, silicone‐based coating swells and exhibits same fire performance as commercial intumescent coating at the torch test. It is shown that the incorporation of modifier in the silicone makes it to swell upon heating resulting in the formation of expanded material exhibiting low heat conductivity. Thermal degradation of the coating is also investigated: it occurs in three main steps leading to the formation of a tridimensional network characterized by the formation of Q4 structure at high temperature. The concept of intumescence was applied to flame retard ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). The paper examines two types of intumescence based on expandable graphite (EG, physical expansion) and on modified ammonium polyphosphate (AP760, chemical expansion). The incorporation of expandable graphite (EG) at relatively low loading (10 wt%) in EVA permits the reduction up to 65% of peak of heat release rate (pHRR) measured by cone calorimetry. The mode of action occurs via the formation of an expanded carbonaceous layer acting mainly as heat barrier limiting heat and mass transfer as evidenced by the temperature measurement as a function of time during cone calorimetry. The incorporation of small amount of ZnCO 3 in EVA-AP760 enhances strongly the performance: pHRR was not reduced using the sole AP760 while it is decreased by 54% when only 2 wt% of AP760 is substituted by ZnCO 3. A strong synergistic effect was therefore observed. Solid state NMR of 31 P and 13 C on cone residues prepared at different characteristic times evidenced the mechanism involved is the reinforcement of the protective char by the formation of phosphate glass limiting the creation of cracks and increasing the char strength.

Flame‐retardant hyperbranched pentaerythritol (FR‐HPER) was prepared by condensation polymerization between pentaerythritol (PER), the monomer, and phosphate acid we prepared. It was then characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analysis, and matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometer (MALDI‐TOF‐MS). This FR‐HPER was used in the preparation of natural rubber (NR)/FR‐HPER composites. Different types of NR/FR‐HPER composites were prepared with different amounts of FR‐HPER, and compared with the composites directly incorporated with PER. Then, the tensile, wear resistant, thermal, and FR properties were researched and compared. Results showed that some mechanical and FR properties of NR/FR‐HPER composites showed obvious improvements compared with that of NR and NR/PER systems. Schemes of toughening, wear resistant, and FR mechanism were proposed. The hyperbranched polymer may reduce the amount and size of voids in NR matrix, and thus increase the tensile properties. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect between nitrogen in PER and phosphorus in phosphate acid can increase the amount of carbonaceous layers, and thus may inhibit the pyrolysis degree of NR matrix during burning. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
