Solidification Sequence of Spray-Formed Steels

Abstract: Solidification in spray-forming is still an open discussion in the atomization and deposition area. This paper proposes a solidification model based on the equilibrium solidification path of alloys. The main assumptions of the model are that the deposition zone temperature must be above the alloy's solidus temperature and that the equilibrium liquid fraction at this temperature is reached, which involves partial remelting and/or redissolution of completely solidified droplets. When the deposition zone is coole… Show more

“…Some peaks related to oxides are observed in the XRD pattern, which are related to the strong oxidation tendency of these compositions, increased by the high specific surface area of the particles. It is well known from the literature that the Metals 2020, 10, 352 7 of 17 dendritic microstructure observed in the droplets leads to a highly homogeneous equiaxed grains in the microstructure of the deposit, as described in [23,24] and as can be observed in Figures 5 and 6.…”

“…Comparing literature results of dry sand/rubber wheel [16,17], the worn volumes of specimens obtained by spray forming with the same composition are nearly in the range of PTA. Spray forming led to slightly higher abrasive resistance due to the more homogeneous distribution of boride particles and the finer equiaxed grains achieved [17,25].…”
