Soluble ICAM‐1 as a regulator of nasal allergic reaction under natural allergen provocation

Abstract: We demonstrate systemic and local upregulation of sICAM-1 and systemic downregulation of LFA-1 positive lymphocytes in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis under natural allergen provocation, suggesting that sICAM-1 plays a role in regulating seasonal allergic inflammation.

“…To circumvent the dilution, the raw data of total IgE and IgG were normalized with urea concentrations, which were assumed to diffuse freely between tissue and secretions (10). After normalization, the total IgE amounts in the NLF ranged from undetectable to 45.8 (median 1.67) IU/ml, while those in serum were from 6.7 to 1,125 (median 88.6) IU/ml.…”

“…Patients were precluded if they had received topical or systemic glucocorticoid therapy within the preceding 3 months or had suffered from upper respiratory infections within 1 month. The nasal lavage was performed by instilling 5 ml of sterile saline to each nostril according to the previous report (10). The serum was drawn subsequently, and the nasal lavage fluids and sera were separated from cells by a centrifugation at 1,500ϫg to be stored frozen until analysis.…”

“…During the past several years, serum sICAM‐1 levels have been studied in allergic conditions, such as atopic dermatitis and asthma 7‐13 . However, serum sICAM‐1 levels in perennial allergic rhinitis remain to be investigated.…”

“…Serum levels of sICAM‐1 were determined in asthma, 7‐10 seasonal allergic rhinitis, 11 and atopic dermatitis, 12,13 but not in perennial allergic rhinitis. If the levels of sICAM‐1 vary between patients with perennial allergic rhinitis and normal controls, this variance would be very useful to assess or monitor the state of this disease underlying the inflammation responsible for nasal symptoms.…”
