“…Recently a study including 3 native German speaking adults, compared changes in high-␥ spectral power related to retrospectively selected epochs of natural language with conventional ECS. On including both oral motor and speech sites as true positive, this study found a high specificity (96.7%) but very low sensitivity (18.9%) (Ruescher et al, 2013). The authors concluded that their procedure was not usable for clinical language mapping.…”

“…During ECS, it is sometimes difficult to differentiate naming deficits as being due to cognitive (aphasia) versus motor (dysarthria) dysfunction, and the distinction is often based on neuroanatomy. Thus, taking both the conditions as true positive likely yields most ecologically valid comparison (Ruescher et al, 2013). These observations show that HGS mapping can be a useful screening method for pre-selection of electrodes to be tested for language by conventional ECS.…”

“…[18][19][20][21] These studies have all assumed ESM as the gold standard for identifying eloquent cortex and predicting postresection deficits. The ideal gold standard for functional mapping is postoperative outcome following resection of a cortical site.…”

“…Although gamma activity has been proposed as the main frequency range allowing to reliably perform functional mapping of eloquent cortex [27], our study demonstrates that other frequency bands can also provide significant results and should be taken into consideration. Importantly, particular attention must be paid to a lower than gamma frequency ranges when motor function and motor imagery is concerned.…”
