Some Methods to Prevent the Wear of Piston-Cylinder When Using Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (LSFO) for All Ships Sailing on Emission Control Areas (ECAs)

Abstract: The IMO (International Maritime Organization) of MARPOL 73/78, Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships, has been adopted and took effect from May 2005 and had significantly to the present. The increases in a number of ships are leading to a large of number of exhaust gas emission into the environment. It is main reason that the Annex VI, MARPOL 73/78 is extremely necessary to require the ships need to comply. Furthermore, the marine fuel is used mainly for marine diesel engine nowadays, heav… Show more

“…The transition to low-sulfur fuel is anticipated to impact combustion efficiency, subsequently influencing thermal efficiency. The analysis involves a detailed calculation considering enthalpy, heat balance, combustion efficiency, mechanical efficiency, and overall efficiency (1)(2)(3)(4)(5). The aim is to quantify the potential enhancements in shipboard technical facility performance achieved by adopting low-sulfur marine fuel grades.…”

“…Fuel-related challenges extend beyond compliance issues. Source [5] explores methods to prevent wear on piston-cylinders when using Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (LSFO) in emission control areas. Paper [6] focuses on the distribution of low sulfur shipping fuels in the Baltic Sea region, highlighting logistical challenges in bunkering boat-ship supply.…”

“…However, the Lubricants 2023, 11, 264 2 of 19 offering does not come empty-handed, and there is a high price we have to pay. Human health, aquatic life, and the air and marine environment have all been compromised due to the poisonous emissions from inefficient marine engines and lubricants [1][2][3][4]. Therefore, improved marine engine oil is extremely important for enhancing engine performance and efficiency.…”

“…Most of the engine arrangements could not be quickly adapted to the use of low sulfur fuels [2,13,29]. Consequently, ship operators faced significant problems with machinery operation and the number of reported incidents related to fuel changeover raised significantly [3,13,17].…”
