“…No clear relationship between adverse general health effects and exposure to endocrine modulators has been established, although involvement of EDs in human pathology has been suggested in numerous studies (95)(96)(97)(98)(99)(100)(101)(102). The influence of chemical compounds on allergic immune responses remains also unclear.…”

“…The ratio of male to female births was reduced for offspring of men heavily exposed to dioxin in Seveso, Italy (54). In a study of 29 patients and 14 controls, significantly higher amounts of tetra-and pentachlorinated biphenyls, DDE, DDT, and lindane (γ-hexachlorocyclohexane) were present in male patients with infertility problems than in the controls (55). The levels of three PCB congeners (2,2´,4,4´,5,5´-hexachlorobiphenyl, 2,2´,3´,4,4´,5-hexachlorobiphenyl, and 2,3´,4,4´,5-pentachlorobiphenyl) were inversely correlated with sperm motility index in samples with a sperm count less than 20 million cells/mL (56).…”

“…Analysis of semen for 74 PCB congeners showed that increasing concentrations of three congeners (PCBs 118, 137, and 153) were associated with decreasing sperm motility in men with oligozoospermia (Bush et al 1986). Another study found that blood concentrations of tetraCBs and penta-CBs, but not hexa-CBs and total PCBs, were significantly higher in infertile males than in normal subjects (Pines et al 1987). Some OCPs such as p.p'-DDE, have antiandrogenic activities and in utero or perinatal exposure to these compounds in laboratory animals may cause hypospadia, cryptorchidism, reduced sperm counts and testicular tumor in males (Skakkebaek et al 2001).…”
