Some particular aspects of the physics of the ECR sources for multicharged ions

Abstract: This article emphasizes a confinement model for electrons and ions in an ECR source for multicharged ions, on the basis of specific measurements performed on the 16.6 GHz MINIMAFIOS and 10 GHz CAPRICE facilities. The conclusions partially support the above model.

“…A "cold" plasma core (E<2 keV) is populated by low energy electrons, while the warmer particles (2<E<30 keV) form an envelope in the "equatorial" region. The figure shows that the most part of electrons that are lost are actually cold, and flow away from the plasma along the chamber axis (this is consistent with well-known effects in ECRIS like the bias-disk mechanism [22]). The warm electrons, instead, concentrate in the near resonance region, forming a hollow structure.…”

“…The effect is pronounced at the peripheral parts of the beam. The timescales of the abrupt drop and the subsequent maximum are similar to those observed in the afterglow 5,6 of ECRIS plasmas.…”

“…For instance, in our group, spectroscopic measurements with SiLl detectors have been performed by Paul Briand on the 16 GHz MINIMAFIOS facility [6] with different gases. When looking on the axis of the ECRIS, the K~ and K~ lines of krypton are easily monitored with different RF power levels and the FWHM are plotted.…”
