“…There was a striking resemblance of the edema disease symptoms to those recorded for the exudative diathesis syndrome of vitamin E deficiency in chicks, and it was thought that the outbreaks in poultry could be caused by induction of vitamin E deficiency by the use of poor quality fats (Friedman et al, 1959). Penta-and hexachloronaphthalenes caused high mortality in poults but there was no accumulation of fluids in body cavities (Pudelkiewicz et al, 1958). None of the above compounds can account for the suite of lesions characteristic of outbreaks of GLEMEDS in colonial fish-eating birds in the Great Lakes basin.…”

“…Although no vitamin A analyses were carried out, the authors stated that there were no signs of vitamin A deficiency. Pudelkiewicz et al (1958) investigated effects of Halowax 1014 on Broad Breasted Bronze turkey poults. One-day-old turkey poults of both sexes were exposed for 40 days via the diet at doses of 0, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 mg/kg feed (N = 16, 8 of each sex).…”

“…Necroscopy revealed fluid accumulation in the body cavity and enlarged liver, which was darker in colour than normal. Pudelkiewicz et al (1958) also described an experiment with Broad Breasted Bronze turkey poults exposed to Halowax 1051. One-day-old poults were divided into two groups with 10 poults (5 of each sex).…”
