Some tenets pertaining to electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

Abstract: The field of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry is reviewed with emphasis placed upon advances in the elucidation of fundamental mechanistic aspects of the ionization process that have been reported over the past 10 years. The analytical consequences of these findings are also examined. Eight central conclusions or 'tenets' are presented, as deduced from the body of work contained in 80 references.

“…With the present system, more in-source fragmentation is observed, as shown in the spectrum for Fe 3ϩ in Figure 8. While Fe(NO 3 ) 4 Ϫ is the most abundant ion from the Fe 3ϩ sample , there is a substantial amount of the oxo product FeO(NO 3 ) 3 Ϫ and also Fe(NO 3 ) 3 Ϫ . A small amount of the cluster Fe 2 O(NO 3 ) 5 Ϫ is observed.…”

“…Nevertheless, we can expect that other electrospray particle generators should similarly produce particles that are enhanced in the relative amount of surface active species. 65 The effective SDS coverage for Θ SDS e 1.0 ML can be calculated from the assumed values of ε NaCl (either from the solution composition or from the ZSR fits). 5 This analysis reveals for the 5.0 wt/wt % SDS/NaCl nanoparticles Θ SDS ) 0.4 ML assuming the composition is that of the electrosprayed solution.…”

“…Electrospray ionisation, a technique most commonly used in mass spectrometry [14,15] to create gas phase ions of large molecules such as polymers and proteins, involves passing a solution of the molecule of interest through an emitter (often a metal capillary with OD < 1 mm) held at a high voltage (typically a few kilovolts). At the emitter tip, the large electric field causes polarisation of the solvent and the formation of a Taylor cone.…”
