Non-destructive techniques have always been used in the study of built cultural heritage because of the high cultural value of the concerned objects and the need to preserve them as intact as possible. In this chapter, different non-destructive techniques applied to the conservation of historical building are presented. The selected techniques concern the measurement of some physical properties of the building materials measured at the surface: water absorption, permeability, water content, cohesion, hardness and so on; the actual conditions of the building: stress state, deformation, crack growth and so on; and in-depth physical properties: mechanical properties, inner structure of walls, damp location and salt content. Some of these techniques are used for inspection of the building at a given time, whereas others can be applied for long periods of time to investigate the evolution of the building or of one of its parts (e.g., crack propagation) with time. After presenting the physical background of each method, the main objective of this review is to focus on the applications, especially to discuss which information can be supplied and to present published results in each case. Some techniques are very simple and require very inexpensive equipment but others, which are mainly adaptations of field geophysical techniques, use more sophisticated technology and require post-acquisition treatments based on more complex physical principles. Finally, some examples of combinations of different techniques are presented because a unique method cannot provide all the information needed to understand the weathering processes taking place in a building. The final goal of the studies is to contribute to the preservation of the cultural heritage. The choice of the conservation strategies and methods should be based on a deep knowledge of the building, and nondestructive testing is usually the only way to get it.

In this study, the elastomer cover, a new contact material, was developed to establish the customized ultrasonic measurement considering surface irregularities of stone cultural heritages. The cover exhibits high elastic force and wear resistance because it has tensile strength of 17MPa and elongation of 625%. In addition, as a result of comparative experiments for the seven types according to transducers and contact materials including the elastomer cover, rock surface irregularities significantly affect attenuation of ultrasonic velocity. The phenomenon was more noticeable in the chiseling finish and indirect transmission measurement rather than the dabbed finish and direct transmission measurement. However, the Type F using the exponential transducer and elastomer cover showed stable P-wave velocity and high amplitude regardless of the surface irregularities. This because the elastomer cover sufficiently sticks to surface irregularities and removes pores between a transducer and a rock specimen. Therefore, the Type F should be used for the ultrasonic measurement of stone cultural heritages with surface irregularities.

SUMMARYWe present a fruitful combination of geophysical tests (Ultrasonic Measurements) and photogrammetric processing (Structure from Motion) for the analysis of the integrity of a couple of statues from the Egyptian Museum of Turin. Aim of the study was to investigate the persistence of the exterior widespread fractures within the sculptures. More than one hundred ultrasonic measurements were acquired on selected travel-paths across each statue, using an ultrasonic pulse velocity instrument. Dealing with complex-shape objects of restrained dimensions, it was very important to accurately define the three-dimensional coordinates of sources and receivers, in order to precisely measure their distances. A 3-D model of the statues was obtained from photogrammetric techniques. The acquired data were analyzed with both a statistical approach and tomographic processing, comparing the use of classical and staggered grids, in order to obtain the best fit of the local resolution. The final results revealed a valuable tool to guide the procedures for the mobilization, transport and restoration of the sculptures.
