Sonographically guided core needle biopsy of soft tissue neoplasms

Abstract: US-guided percutaneous core needle biopsy of soft tissue neoplasms is an easy, safe, and useful procedure. It can be considered a first-line procedure for the acquisition of tissue specimens adequate for histopathologic diagnosis.

“…Over a period of two years (June 2004 through July 2006), our staff performed 185 ultrasound-guided needle biopsies: 164 involved soft-tissue lesions (primary, metastatic, or recurrent) [4] and the remaining 21 involved lesions originating in the bone and extending into the adjacent soft tissues.…”

“…Areas of necrosis were avoided to ensure that the pathologist would have abundant tissue to examine. (The diagnosis of soft-tissue tumors is, in fact, based on histology, not cytology) [4].…”

“…A disadvantage is a lower rate of accuracy compared with open biopsy. In the absence of adequate tissue, open biopsy is required [10].…”

“…1c, d) in several cases, it is still difficult to identify the malignant part of the tumour as a region of interest. According to the published results of accuracy in image guided core needle biopsy [5,6,[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] (range from 68% to 97%), at our centre a CT guided core needle biopsy was leading to sampling error three times. Comparing the percentage of sampling errors at our tumour centre in 2.3% (7=299) with the percentage of sampling errors at referring institutions in 8.5% (5=59) our data shows, that we can definitely reduce poor outcome by performing biopsies at tumour centre [22].…”
