Sonographically Guided Cryoneurolysis

Abstract: Chronic peripheral nerve pain is a common problem that can arise from numerous causes, for which neurolysis is a therapeutic option. It is postulated that cryotherapy will have less adverse events than other methods of nerve ablation. A retrospective case series review was performed in patients who had undergone sonographically guided cryoneurolysis for Morton neuromas, postsurgical and posttraumatic neuromas, and idiopathic neuralgia. Fifteen of 20 patients had a positive response to cryoneurolysis, as did 2 … Show more

“…The non‐invasive interventions included two mobilisation and manipulation studies [2, 48], two wider footwear and metatarsal padding studies [3, 4], one extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) study [52] and one orthoses study [50]. The invasive interventions included seven corticosteroid injection studies [1, 3, 22, 39–41, 54], seven sclerosing injection studies [5, 7, 8, 19, 20, 23, 55], three radiofrequency ablation studies [9, 10, 53], two cryoneurolysis studies [49, 51], and one Botox injection study [6]. See Table 2 for the study characteristics and Table 3 for the results of included studies.…”

“…MR-guided Morton's neuroma cryoablation has been reported by Cazzato et al as a feasible and tolerated technique with initially promising results requiring further investigation [12]. Friedman and colleagues reported good clinical results from a retrospective study on 20 patients subjected to USguided cryoablation of Morton's neuroma [97].…”

“…This technique is effective for Morton's neuromas, postsurgical and posttraumatic neuromas, and nerve ablation in idiopathic neuralgia. 30 US-guided cryoablation for peripheral neuromas, most commonly interdigital neuromas, is now well established. The same technique can also be performed for less common neuropathic pain sources, such as Joplin's neuromas, 31 stump neuromas in amputation, and for perineural scarring ( Fig.…”
