Abstract: Sound localization performance improved significantly after canaloplasty. Canaloplasty could provide better localization benefit and subjective improvement in spatial sensation to unilateral CAA patients.

“…Children with aural atresia receive higher rates of speech therapy and other educational interventions than normal-hearing children (Jensen, Grames, & Lieu, 2013; Kesser, Krook, & Gray, 2013). Management options include canalplasty to recreate the external auditory canal, which has been shown to improve hearing and sound localization (Moon et al, 2014), or amplification using either a middle ear implant or bone conduction device, both of which improve directional hearing (Agterberg et al, 2014). …”

“…For example, words originate from one loudspeaker, and noise or a competitive signal is simultaneously sent from a different source (Arndt et al, 2011;Buss et al, 2008;Gantz et al, 2002;Hassepass et al, 2013;Litovsky, Parkinson, Arcaroli, & Sammeth, 2006;Tyler et al, 2002;Tyler, Noble, Dunn, & Witt, 2006). Localization tests usually require subjects to identify the location among an array of loudspeakers from which the sound was emitted (Chang et al, 2010;Dunn, Tyler, & Witt, 2005;Grantham, Ashmead, Ricketts, Labadie, & Haynes, 2007;Kuk, Korhonen, Lau, Keenan, & Norgaard, 2013;Moon et al, 2014).…”

Descriptive features of articles about atresia surgery can be found in Supplemental Content 2, http://links.lww.com/MAO/B684 (9,10,18–52), and descriptive features of articles about implantable devices can be found in Supplemental Content 3, http://links.lww.com/MAO/B685 (8,10,22,43,47,48,53–99). All articles selected for inclusion were at least level 4 based on Oxford Level of Evidence.…”
