Spatial and temporal distribution of trunk‐injected 14C‐imidacloprid in Fraxinus trees

Abstract: Imidacloprid equivalent concentration in leaves varied over time and in relation to injection points. It is concluded that ash trees have sectored 'zigzag' xylem architecture patterns consistent with sectored flow distribution. This could lead to variable distribution of imidacloprid in tree crowns and therefore to variable control of A. planipennis.

“…In hemlock Table 6. (Tsuga canadensis), an evergreen species, imidacloprid concentrations in foliage peak approximately 9 to 15 mo after soil application; but concentrations of its metabolite imidacloprid olefin continue to rise for as long as 3 yr after treatment [48]. ), which is deciduous, occurs during the growing season immediately after treatment, with little remobilization the following year [9,49]. In contrast, most of the accumulation of imidacloprid into leaves of ash (Fraxinus spp.…”

“…Lim (1997) describes a hand-operated pressure injector. A study of the variable spatial and temporal distribution of imidacloprid injected in Fraxinus trees showed that as ash trees have a sectored 'zig-zag' xylem structure, control of Agrilus planipennis, the emerald ash borer, was variable (Tanis et al, 2012). A systemic insecticide such as monocrotophos is used as it is readily taken by the xylem to the crown of the tree.…”

“…[11][12][13] In this work, unlabeled pesticides were injected in coconut tree trunk in order to know if pesticides translocate in the xylem. However, research involving radiolabeled pesticides involves bureaucratic issues and it is more difficult to perform, because it is necessary to isolate the work area (environmental problem), the number of available radiolabeled pesticides is limited, trained professionals are required, and it is an expensive work due to the controlled acquisition and discarding of the radiolabeled pesticides.…”
