Spatial and Temporal Pattern of Road Accidents and Casualties in Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract: Road traffic accidents are often found to follow some spatial and temporal patterns as the factors that influence road accident changes with space and time. Knowledge on spatial and temporal variability of accident can be helpful for optimizing resources in order to improve traffic security management. The objective of the present study is to assess the spatial and temporal variation in the incidence of road traffic accidents and casualties across the states of peninsular Malaysia. Recent trends in number of a… Show more

“…In Malaysia, the RSE program has been introduced in 2007 [64] and in 2008 and implemented in stages in the primary schools starting with year one [2]. Initially, the RSE isblended into the Malay language subject and the lessons areconducted according to the teacher's preparationwhich includes using exercise books, short videos and posters and are carried out without practical training.…”

“…Casualties can be reduced if road users have a welldeveloped road safety culture while they are young. The Malaysian government takes these accident statistics seriously and to address the road safety issue holistically, the government has taken several measures which include education, whereby the road safety education (RSE) program has been introduced in 2007 [60] and implemented in stages in the primary schools starting with year one [1]. RSE not only allows students to understand the road safety and regulations, but also to enable the students to experience the road environment in order to make RSE more effective.…”

“…The use of data in making an informed decision by understanding the accident risk area in the cities is important as a key to traffic safety management. Over the years, studies related to road accidents were carried out in most countries such as Iran (Soltani & Askari, 2014;Soltani & Askari, 2017;Zangeneh et al, 2018), China (Cheng et al, 2018;Fan et al, 2018), United Kingdom (Anderson, 2009;Aljofey & Alwagih, 2018;Kazmi et al, 2020), Indonesia (Sitohang & Merni, 2020), Vietnam (Le et al, 2020), Malaysia (Musdholifah & Hadhim, 2013;Shahid et al, 2015) and many more. Thus, many researchers have contributed to road accident studies in identifying the accident hotspot sites using analysis such as spatial-temporal clustering of Geographical Information System (GIS) (Kavgisiv et al, 2015;Zangeneh et al, 2018;Lakshmi et al, 2019;Kazmi, 2020), Kernel Density Estimation (Musdholifah & Hadhim, 2013;Fan et al, 2018), Triangular Kernel Clustering (Asadi & Pegun, 2019), Deep Embedded Clustering (Shahido et al, 2015, K-Means Clustering (Ghadi & Thorok, 2020;Sitohang & Merni, 2020) and many others.…”

“…The results were able to identify the high number of accidents that tend to happen at the East-West back-bone road, Traian Vuia-Calea Floresti which is the exit-access points in the city. A study done by Shahid et al (2015) adopted GIS to determine the spatial and temporal variation in the incidence of road traffic accidents and fatalities across the states of Peninsular Malaysia in Malaysia. The findings showed more accidents but lower fatalities in more urbanized and developed states.…”
