Spatial codistribution of HIV, tuberculosis and malaria in Ethiopia

Abstract: BackgroundHIV, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria are the three most important infectious diseases in Ethiopia, and sub-Saharan Africa. Understanding the spatial codistribution of these diseases is critical for designing geographically targeted and integrated disease control programmes. This study investigated the spatial overlap and drivers of HIV, TB and malaria prevalence in Ethiopia.MethodsHIV, TB and malaria data were obtained from different nationwide prevalence surveys, and geospatial covariates were obtaine… Show more

“…Moreover, low predicted BCG vaccination coverage was observed in Afar, Benishangul, Gambela, and Somali regions [ 32 ]. Spatial clustering of TB was reported in these parts of the country in previous studies [ 33 , 34 ]. This might indicate that in the area with low BCG vaccination there might be a high rate of TB incidence, an important finding to strengthen the BCG vaccination program in this part of the county.…”

“…Model fitness was assessed for the final Bayesian spatial model using the leave-one-out predictive measures, specifically the conditional predictive ordinates (CPO) [48] and the probability-integral transform (PIT) [49] statistics. The implicit assumptions in the INLA program were checked using the within-sample predictive accuracy measures (see S3 File).…”

“…Moreover, HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria are the three most important infectious diseases in West Africa. With the fragile economic conditions and healthcare systems in the region, intervention measures such as lockdown and quarantine can be more catastrophic than the disease itself ( 7 ). The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in disruptions of routine healthcare services and diversion of the already limited available resources in West Africa ( 8 ).…”
