Spatial distribution of dimethylsulfide and dimethylsulfoniopropionate in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea during summer

Abstract: Abstrac tThe distributions of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and its precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in surface water of the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea were studied during June 2011. The mean concentrations and ranges of DMS, dissolved DMSP (DMSPd), and particulate DMSP (DMSPp) in surface waters were 6.85 (1.60-12.36), 7.25 (2.28-19.05) and 61.87 (6.28-224.01) nmol/L, respectively. There were strong correlations between DMSPp and chlorophyll a in the Bohai Sea and the North Yellow Sea, respectively, and c… Show more

“…The Chl a contents generally decreased from the inshore to offshore areas, with minimum values in the medium and bottom layers of the offshore stations. High values of sulfur compounds in the surface seawater and higher concentrations in the YSCWM region than in the well-mixed shallow-water region were in agreement with the results of Yang et al (2015b). In addition, there was a relatively high value of DMS in the bottom layer of station H23.…”

“…Both Chl a and DMS did not displayed obviously stratified distributions. High values of the sulfur compounds in the surface seawater and higher concentrations in the YSCWM region than in the well mixed shallow water 220 region were in line with the results of Yang et al (2015b). There was a high value of DMS in the bottom layer of station H23, which might result from the release from porewater (Andreae, 1985).…”

“…AA showed positive relationships with DMSPd in the SYS, which suggests that AA in the SYS is mainly produced by DMSPd degradation rather than the terrestrial inputs. Although phytoplankton plays an important role in controlling 175 the levels of sulfur products, some researchers still found no correlations between Chl a and them in this study area (Li et al, 2016;Yang et al, 2015b) .…”

“…3), where we found an inverse relationship between salinity and NO surface concentrations. Here high NO concentrations were associated with high DIN concentrations (data not shown; see Liu et al, 2015;Yang et al, 2015) indicating that DIN, especially NO − 2 , was a prerequisite for enhanced NO concentrations.…”
