Spatial Genetic Structure and Pathogenic Race Composition at the Field Scale in the Sunflower Downy Mildew Pathogen, Plasmopara halstedii

Abstract: Yield losses in sunflower crops caused by Plasmopara halstedii can be up to 100%, depending on the cultivar susceptibility, environmental conditions, and virulence of the pathogen population. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic and phenotypic structure of a sunflower downy mildew agent at the field scale. The genetic diversity of 250 P. halstedii isolates collected from one field in southern France was assessed using single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and single sequence repeats (SSR). A t… Show more

“…To date, no study on L. biglobosa population diversity based on the SSR marker has been reported. In addition, previous studies showed that the virulence of some fungal pathogens was also associated with their genetic clusters [37,38]. Therefore, the objectives of this study were (i) to develop an SSR-based method for the population study of L. biglobosa 'brassica'; (ii) to characterize the genetic diversity and population structure of L. biglobosa 'brassica' in the winter oilseed region of China; and (iii) to test the virulence of different genetic clusters.…”

“…Phoma macdonaldi, Puccinia helianthi, Alternaria helianthi) and parasite (Orobanche cumana Wallr). Sunflower downy mildew produced by the pathogen Plasmopara halstedii has a negative impact on sunflower production causing losses of up to 100% (Elameen et al, 2022). The seed yield of sunflower hybrids is highly influenced by the environment, and the oil content is not greatly affected by it (Ahmed et al, 2020).…”
