We study the relationship between ultrahigh‐speed broadband coverage (≥100 Mbps) and population change in rural areas. Our goal is to determine whether improved telecommunications infrastructure can help to mitigate rural de‐population. The study focuses on Spain during the years 2013–20, a period when most of the country's broadband network was deployed. We use instrumental variable estimation to test for a causal link between ultrahigh‐speed broadband provision and rural population change. Although the data show a positive correlation between an increase in local ultrahigh‐speed broadband coverage and local population growth, after accounting for potential confounding factors and endogeneity, we find no evidence of a causal effect.

This study investigates the factors that influence the adoption of digital technology in rural areas of India, with a focus on the Digital India Program (DIP). By analyzing the age distribution, education levels, technology adoption rates, and utilization patterns among rural populations, this research provides insights into the effectiveness of the DIP in targeting specific demographics and promoting digital inclusion. Quantitative data were collected from 400 respondents in Kalahandi District in the Odisha state of India. The data collected were analyzed using SPSS. The findings reveal a predominantly young population in rural India, indicating a workforce with significant economic potential and a higher likelihood of embracing digital technologies. Moreover, the study highlights the high levels of education among respondents, indicating a population well-equipped to understand and benefit from digital initiatives. Unexpectedly, the research shows a higher rate of digital technology adoption among female respondents, challenging the perception of gender disparities in technology access. This finding suggests that the DIP has played a vital role in bridging the gender gap and empowering women in rural areas. Additionally, the study uncovers a trend towards mobile-based services over computer-based services, signaling a shift in technology utilization patterns. This emphasizes the need to prioritize mobile technology and improve connectivity in rural areas to ensure wider access to digital platforms.

Despite the increasing interest in understanding the relations between firms' digitalization and their environmental sustainability, they are still poorly understood as research on this hot topic is nascent and empirical evidence is sparse and fragmented. In this study, we delve into the relations between different digital data‐driven technologies (DTs) used for gathering and storing (smart devices and cloud computing), analyzing (Big Data and Artificial Intelligence), and sharing data (Blockchain) and environmental sustainability in micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These firms, despite their relevance in the business landscape and their heterogeneity, are understudied in this area. Thus, we also examine the moderating role of firm size to understand the inherent diversity of MSMEs in the use of DTs and the development of the sustainability oriented practices. Empirical results from a large‐scale representative sample of European enterprises show that the adoption of DTs for data gathering and analysis is positively associated with sustainability‐oriented actions in MSMEs. The findings also reveal the positive moderating role of size: relations between data analysis and sharing technologies and sustainability are stronger for larger MSMEs, with the latter being significant only for medium‐sized enterprises.
