Spatial synchrony in the recruitment of intertidal invertebrates along the coast of central Chile

Abstract: Recruitment is among the processes that most directly influence spatio-temporal patterns of abundance, productivity, and persistence in marine populations. Understanding the connection between patterns of recruitment and environmental forcing has major implications for the conservation and management of marine ecosystems. Theoretical and empirical studies have shown that dispersal and regional variability in environmental conditions may synchronize distant populations and generate patterns of spatial synchrony… Show more

“…The increased abundance of P. africanus during the time when no correlation was found between wind and its supply might be explained by the duration of nighttime flood tides. Larval transport processes may be coherent over spatial scales from tens (Lagos et al 2007) to hundreds (Diehl et al 2007) of km for different coastal organisms, and the likely mechanisms we discuss herein may apply to other coastal areas along the southwestern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. However, independent results are lacking and, therefore, support for the mechanisms proposed is still awaited.…”

“…These collectors have been used extensively in recruitment studies of mussels and other invertebrate species in Chile (Narváez et al 2006, Lagos et al 2007, Caro et al 2010) and elsewhere (Menge et al 1994, Le Corre et al 2013. Collectors can be taken back to the laboratory for identification of settlers under a dissecting scope.…”
