Spatial-Temporal Characteristics of Coastline Changes in Indonesia from 1990 to 2018

Abstract: As a valuable resource in coastal areas, coastlines are not only vulnerable to natural processes such as erosion, siltation, and disasters, but are also subjected to strong pressures from human processes such as urban growth, resource development, and pollution discharge. This is especially true for reef nations with rich coastline resources and a large population, like Indonesia. The technical joint of remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) has significant advantages for monitoring coastl… Show more

“…Several coastline definitions are reported in literature, one of the most spread is the portion of land that contains the emerged and submerged areas and is subject to continental and marine geomorphologic processes (Dominici et al, 2019). Mapping the coastline and its evolution is of fundamental importance since most of the coasts (from 24% to 70%) are subject to the erosion phenomenon (Sui et al, 2020;Mentaschi et al, 2018;Zhou et al, 2017). Italy's coast is approximately 8300 km.…”

“…However, as a developing nation, Indonesia faces its own unique challenges when it comes to plastic waste management. While many common domestic factors are still to blame, the country's 91,363km coastline (Sui et al, 2020) means that it is exposed to plastic waste that is generated in other parts of the South East Asian region (Putri et al, 2018). Indonesia therefore needs to work with neighboring governments to ensure that there is a transnational approach to its management and a coordinated effort to tackle the problem by not only restricting the use of plastics, but by also adopting more effective means of managing plastic disposal.…”

“…The total length of Indonesia's coastline in 2018 was 91,363.65 km (Sui et al 2020). Coastal area becomes home to an ecosystem of mangrove forests, coral reefs, and seagrass beds.…”
