Spatio-temporal dynamics of fish assemblage in the Datong and Xiaotong rivers, karst tributaries in the upper Yangtze River drainage: Implications for ecological adaptation and conservation of fish in rivers

Abstract: The Datong and Xiaotong rivers are karst tributaries in the upper Yangtze River drainage and represent considerable habitat diversity that contributes to high fish diversity and rich fishery resources in the two rivers. During the few decades, fish resources have abruptly declined due to overfishing, water pollution and habitat degradation. In order to further strengthen conservation and restoration of fish resources and provide scientific support for fishery management in these rivers, the temporal and spatia… Show more

“…Following the execution of Yangtze River Protection Strategy, along with the implementation of a series of measures, the indicators (water quality, fish diversity, wetland area, and so forth) of the Yangtze River ecosystem have been improved. 8 , 9 , 10 Monitoring of the water quality of the Yangtze River revealed a distinct improvement in water quality with gradual decrease in the frequency of anoxic conditions, alleviation of the severity of heavy metal pollution, and moderate mitigation of eutrophication in recent years. In addition, strict control of fishing intensity resulted in an increase in the fish communities, and the fishing moratorium had an obvious effect on maintaining the stability of fish resources.…”
