Understanding the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of ecosystem services (ESs) and their drivers in mountainous areas is important for sustainable ecosystem management. However, the effective construction of landscape heterogeneous units (LHUs) to reflect the spatial characteristics of ESs remains to be studied. The southern hill and mountain belt (SHMB) is a typical mountainous region in China, with undulating terrain and obvious spatial heterogeneity of ESs, and was selected as the study area. In this study, we used the fuzzy k-means (FKM) algorithm to establish LHUs. Three major ESs (water yield, net primary productivity (NPP), and soil conservation) in 2000 and 2015 were quantified using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model and Carnegie Ames-Stanford approach (CASA) model. Then, we explored the spatial variation in ESs along terrain gradients and LHUs. Correlation analysis was used to analyze the driving factors of ESs in each terrain region and LHU. The results showed that altitude and terrain niche increased along LHUs. Water yield and soil conservation increased from 696.86 mm and 3920.19 t/km2 to 1061.12 mm and 5117.90 t/km2, respectively, while NPP decreased from 666.95 gC/m2 to 648.86 gC/m2. The ESs in different LHUs differed greatly. ESs increased first and then decreased along LHUs in 2000. In 2015, water yield decreased along LHUs, while NPP and soil conservation showed a fluctuating trend. Water yield was mainly affected by precipitation, temperature and NDVI were the main drivers of NPP, and soil conservation was greatly affected by precipitation and slope. The driving factors of the same ES were different in different terrain areas and LHUs. The variation and driving factors of ESs in LHUs were similar to some terrain gradients. To some extent, LHUs can represent multiple terrain features. This study can provide important support for mountain ecosystem zoning management and decision-making.

A comprehensive understanding of the trade-off/synergy relationships that exist among multiple ecosystem services (ESs) has become increasingly important for ecological management and sustainable development. However, the determination of the factors that promote trade-off/synergy relationships and the extent to which the driving factors affect these complex relationships have not been well studied, limiting the effectiveness of sustainable ecosystem management. This study employed the Yangtze River Delta region in China as the study area and investigated the spatiotemporal changes in three ESs, namely, carbon storage (CS), water purification (WP), and habitat quality (HQ), from 2005 to 2015. A trade-off/synergy degree (TSD) indicator was developed that allowed for the quantification of the trade-off/synergy intensity, and the spatial pattern of the TSD between ESs in the YRD region was analyzed. Furthermore, a geographically weighted regression (GWR) model was used to analyze the relationship between the driving factors and trade-offs/synergies. The results revealed that CS, WP, and HQ decreased by 1.17%, 2.49%, and 3.38%, respectively. The TSD indicator showed that the trade-off/synergy relationships and their magnitudes were spatially heterogeneous. The coefficients of the natural and socioeconomic factors obtained from the GWR indicated that their impacts on the trade-offs/synergies vary spatiotemporally. The impact factors had both positive and negative effects on the trade-offs/synergies. The values of R2 and AIC implied that the selected factors had significant explanatory power for the trade-off/synergy relationships between paired ESs. The findings could improve the understanding of the spatiotemporal dynamics of trade-offs/synergies and their spatially heterogeneous correlations with related factors.

The suddenness and destructive power of earthquake disasters pose significant threats to ecosystems. Understanding the changes in post‐earthquake ecosystem services and the complex relationships of their trade‐offs and synergistic effects is crucial for post‐disaster recovery and achieving a holistic and sustainable balance of human well‐being. However, quantifying post‐disaster ecosystem services and these intricate relationships, as well as probing the mechanisms behind their formation from a spatial perspective, remain challenging. This study presents a comprehensive framework that integrates spatial statistical methods, the InVEST model, geodetectors, and the Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression model (MGWR) to quantify trade‐offs and synergistic effects among ecosystem services before and after earthquakes, and to investigate the spatial heterogeneity of these relationship effects with various driving factors. Results indicate (1) Typical ecosystem services, that is, water yield, soil conservation, carbon storage, and habitat quality, have more weak trade‐off effects and fewer synergistic effects. These relationship intensities vary considerably spatially, demonstrating some agglomerative distribution, suggesting that the ecosystem has not yet recovered to a good state after the quake; (2) The impact of different factors on the trade‐offs and synergies between ecosystem services varies. Interaction effects of driving factors are stronger than singular effects. Relationships between soil conservation and other ecosystem services are primarily influenced by topography and climate. Relationships involving carbon storage are mainly affected by vegetation and climate, while those concerning habitat quality are attributed mostly to human and climatic factors; (3) In the modeling process, considering the different spatial scales of driving factors, MGWR outperforms the Geographically Weighted Regression in explaining the relationship between ecosystem services and driving factors. Moreover, several spatially feasible and targeted ecological measures are proposed to enhance the synergy among ecosystem services. By focusing on the changes in ecosystem services, this study reveals the intrinsic mechanisms of trade‐offs and synergies between ecosystem services, offering insights for related studies in other regions.
