Spatiotemporal Patterns and Determinants of Grain Self-Sufficiency in China

Abstract: The pattern of grain self-sufficiency plays a fundamental role in maintaining food security. We analyzed the patterns and determinants of grain production and demand, as well as grain self-sufficiency, in China over a 30-year period. The results show that China’s total grain production, with an obvious northeast–southwest direction, increased by 63%, and yields of rice, wheat, corn, tubers, and beans increased by 16, 49, 224, 6, and 103%, respectively. The trends in ration and feed grain consumption changes at… Show more

“…With the deepening development of globalization, the importance of global food trade to food security has been widely recognized [11]. More and more countries have changed from being self-sufficient to participating in the global food trade [12,13]. Geographical barriers have ceased to be obstacles due to the development of transportation and freshkeeping technologies in past years.…”

“…Second, cropland should be used more efficiently to increase grain yield. An increase in grain yield is a prerequisite for grain self‐sufficiency (Niu et al., 2021). Our results indicate that the regional grain self‐sufficiency rate has decreased after the implementation of two GGP phases (Figure 4), suggesting that these regions have not yet reached the stage of synergetic development of green and grain.…”

“…Different values of per capita food demand will affect the amount of cultivated land held. Considering the National Medium-and Long-term Plan for Food Security (2008-2020) and information from related references [38][39][40][41], China's per capita food demand must be more than 425 kg/person. Xinjiang Province has a self-sufficiency rate of over 100%, but it is only in its own balance [39].…”
