Special Consideration in the Management of Hump Noses in Asians

Abstract: Although not as prevalent as in Caucasian rhinoplasty, correction of a hump nose also poses a significant problem for East Asian rhinoplasty. The hump noses in East Asians can be classified as generalized humps, isolated humps, and relative humps with a low tip. Appropriate management of the Asian hump nose demands a good understanding of the anatomical characteristics unique to East Asians. “…Given the widespread landmass of Asia, it comes as no surprise that the physical traits of this population, too, are highly variable. For example, many authors note a stark difference in the nasal anatomy of Indians, using East or Southeast Asian to specify exclusion of this group [12 ▪ ,15,28,29,30 ▪ ]. “…Because of the high number of rhinoplasties performed in East Asia, there is an abundance of publications on this population. Most authors highlight mesorrhine features similar to Mestizo patients (Table 1): low radix, possibility for a severely low/concave dorsum or convex dorsum, wide dorsum, wide alar base with poorly projected and defined nasal tip [28–30 ▪ ,32 ▪▪ ,33]. Dorsal augmentation is one of the most common techniques performed during rhinoplasty on these patients using both alloplasts and allografts [30 ▪ ].…”
