Speciation Analysis of Arsenic Compounds by HPLC-ICP-MS: Application for Human Serum and Urine

Abstract: A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) as an elemental specific detector was used for the speciation analysis of arsenic compounds in urine and serum samples from Vietnam. Five arsenic species including arsenite (AsIII), arsenate (AsV), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), and arsenobetaine (AsB) were studied. A gradient elution of ammonium carbonate ((NH4)2CO3), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt… Show more

“…According to the recent literature reviews, it shows that groundwater in these regions is contaminated with As at a high level, exceeding the allowed standard from 8 to 18 times. Therefore, the issue of clean water to ensure hygiene for people in Vietnam is not guaranteed [ 19 ].…”

“…Arsenic compounds were detected via an arsenic monoxide tracer ( 75 As 16 O + ) by ICP-DRC-QMS employed with oxygen as the reaction gas. The separation of five arsenic species in this work was modified from our previous studies [17, 18]. In brief, five arsenic species were separated on the strong anion-exchange column with gradient of mobile phase, which was described as follows: the concentration of methanol and EDTA in the mobile phase was 5% and 0.05%, respectively.…”

“…ICP‐MS has been regarded as one of the leading techniques in the field of elemental analysis, focusing on the determination of ultra‐trace levels of metals and metalloids in a large variety of sample types [144–151]. This technique has been also applied to the quantitative measurement of metal‐containing PEGylated pharmaceuticals or nanoparticles [152–160].…”
