Species composition, richness, and distribution of marine bivalve molluscs in Bahía de Mazatlán, México

Abstract: We describe the composition and distribution of bivalve molluscs from the sandy and rocky intertidal and the shallow subtidal environments of Bahía de Mazatlán, México. The bivalve fauna of the bay is represented by 89 living species in 28 families, including 37 new records and four range extensions: Lithophaga hastasia, Adula soleniformis, Mactrellona subalata, and Strigilla ervilia. The number of species increases from the upper (44) and lower intertidal (53) to the shallow subtidal (76), but only 11 (17%) h… Show more

“…A relevant difference is observed with only eight genera of bivalves found in this study with respect to 55 genera recorded in the subtropical Mazatlán Bay in Mexico [43]. 75% of the genera collected in TSB were gastropods; this high percentage has also been observed in Sinaloa coastal region where 70% of the species belong to this class [28], and according to Castillo-Rodríguez [44] the class Gastropoda is usually more diverse than Bivalvia.…”

“…The Mexican Pacific coast has greater diversity of marine mollusks with 2567 species compared with a total of 2067 recorded together in the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean (Castillo-Rodríguez, 2014). However, most of the subtidal studies in the Mexican Pacific were carried out in soft bottoms (Martínez-Cordoba, 1996;Zamorano et al, 2007;Ríos-Jara et al, 2008, 2009Zamorano and Hendrickx, 2011;Hendrickx et al, 2014;Esqueda-González et al, 2014;Kuk-Dzul and Díaz-Castañeda, 2016), while the malacological description of subtidal hard bottoms has been a more recent undertaking (González-Medina et al, 2006;Landa-Jaime et al, 2013).…”
