Specific bioanalytical optical and photoelectrochemical assays for detection of methanol in alcoholic beverages

Abstract: Methanol is a poison which is frequently discovered in alcoholic beverages. Innovative methods to detect methanol in alcoholic beverages are being constantly developed. We report for the first time a new strategy for the detection of methanol using fluorescence spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical (PEC) analysis. The analytical system is based on the oxidation of cysteine (CSH) with hydrogen peroxide (HO) enzymatically generated by alcohol oxidase (AOx). HO oxidizes capping agent CSH, modulating the growth of… Show more

“…These substances are commonly used in industry and as household products. Too high exposure to volatile organic compounds can have both short- and long-term adverse effects on health, such as respiratory failure [108,109,110,111]. An exemplary QDs-based sensors for volatile substances determination are presented in Table 9.…”

“…Barroso et al [110] presented a new strategy for the detection of methanol using fluorescence spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical (PEC) analysis. The analytical system is based on the oxidation of cysteine (CSH) with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) enzymatically generated by alcohol oxidase (AOx).…”

“…Although methanol is present in small amounts in alcoholic beverages, in large amounts it can cause intoxication or death (the lethal dose lies between 30 and 120 mL). Intoxication symptomatology depends on the amount ingested and can cause headache, nausea, vomiting, damage to the retina, internal hemorrhage, liver and renal failure, and death (Barroso et al, 2018).…”

“…To overcome this issue, the in situ formation of nanomaterials as a result of an enzymatic reaction is presented as the best alternative. Increasing number of publications in bioanalysis is dedicated to the use of enzymes for the in situ formation of nanoparticles as the read‐out signal mainly due to their optical and electrochemical properties. This approach maintains the advantages of the previous strategy and also avoids the need of pre‐synthesized nanoparticles simplifying the bioassay.…”
