Specific heat and magnetic interactions inNdCrO3

Abstract: The specific heat of NdCrO 3 in the thermal range from 0.3 to 300 K is presented. The magnetic ordering of Cr ions at T N ϭ219Ϯ1 K is observed, as well as the spin reorientation transition ͑SRT͒ at T SRT ϭ34.2 Ϯ0.5 K. The specific heat of the isostructural nonmagnetic compound LaGaO 3 has been subtracted, allowing us to separate and quantify the different magnetic contributions to the specific heat in NdCrO 3. The exchange coupling constant for the Cr-Cr interaction is found to be ͉J Cr ͉/k B ϭ21.7͑7͒ K. The f… Show more

“…Calculated ⌬E / k B for Nd 3+ ions in this work gives a value of the energy splitting of ϳ27 K, in excellent agreement with neutron inelastic experiments ͑ϳ28 K͒. 28 The energy splitting ⌬E / k B is reduced in the La doped samples, which is attributed to the weaker Cr-RE interactions. The splitting of the Cr 3+ 3d orbital and the Nd 3+ ground state in Nd 1−x La x CrO 3 are shown in Fig.…”

“…With falling temperature, the first magnetic ordering was observed at T N = 219.6 K for undoped NdCrO 3 , which is attributed to the Cr 3+ spin ordering. 28 It is found that T N increases linearly from 219.6 K for pure NdCrO 3 to 291.3 K for LaCrO 3 . In Nd 1−x La x CrO 3 , the Cr 3+ ions are predominantly ordered antiferromagnetically with a small canting angle, which results in a net moment starting to appear below T N .…”

“…The ordering of Dy moment emerges at ≈18 K, whereas a slight ordering of Dy moment via Dy-V coupling starts at ≈36 K. 30 In the case of NdCrO 3 , while the Cr spin reorientation happens at ≈34.2 K, the Nd-Cr interaction starts to polarize the Nd moments at ≈11 K before Nd becomes long-range ordered. 31 We now turn to discuss the long-range Ce AFM ordering below T Ce ≈ 4 K. Zhao et al 10 proposed a magnetic structure of Ce sublattice based on their powder neutron measurements. The projections of nearest-neighbor Ce moments in the ab plane are perpendicular to each other with slight tilting of Ce moments towards the c axis, forming a noncollinear magnetic structure.…”
