Specific Sialochemical and Sialometric Changes and Cariogenic Risk in Patients with Primary Sjogren`s Syndrome

Abstract: The main aim of our study was to perform a biochemical analysis of the saliva and to assess potential impact on oral health, particularly cariogenic issues, in patients with salivary secretory dysfunction such as primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSSj). Consecutive pSSj and healthy age-matched controls were prospectively assessed for (i) whole saliva flow rates (unstimulated, RFR, and stimulated, RFS), pH and composition; (ii) cariogenic scores -decayed, missing and filled tooth surfaces (DMFS index), Silnes and Loe… Show more

“…RA patients develop frequently Sjogren's Syndrome, which has the most orofacial symptoms. Sjogren's syndrome affects moisture-producing glands, such as lacrimal and salivary glands [11]. In patients aged over 40, xerostomia is the major oral symptom of Sjogren's syndrome, followed by painless swelling of the parotid and submandibular salivar y glands.…”

“…Sandostatin is considered as a protective factor that decreases the incidence of pancreatic fistula by its role in decreasing the secretion of pancreatic enzymes [15][16][17]18]. Considering this effect of sandostatin and the desire to resolve a serious problem -the pancreatic fistula -many surgeons decided the routine administration of sandostatin after pancreatic resections [17].…”

“…Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is a multisystemic disease mainly characterized by the hypofunction of the lachrymal and salivary glands and can be either primary or secondary, when related to other autoimmune pathologies [1]. The clinical manifestations are both glandular consisting of xerostomia, xerophthalmia, swelling of the parotid and submandibulary glands and extra-glandular such as arthritis or arthralgias, vasculitis, Raynaud phenomenon, respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurological, hematological and renal involvement [2,3].…”
