Spectral shift response of optical whispering-gallery modes due to water vapor adsorption and desorption

Abstract: The spectral shift response of optical whispering-gallery modes due to the adsorption and desorption of water molecules into a SiO 2 nano-coating is investigated. This coating is applied to a silica microsphere and optical-shift measurements are made at a very low humidity level (<10%). The micro-optical coupling system is incorporated into a sealed vacuum chamber for controlled humidity testing. The experimental observation of the whispering-gallery-mode spectral shift with refractive index is consistent with… Show more

“…One such method derives from the use of a coating on the resonator, which is modified upon absorption or adsorption of the desired gas [259]. For example, a humidity sensor based on a hydrophilic coating of SiO 2 nanoparticles has recently been reported [260], as too has ethanol vapor detection using a porous ZnO coating [261]. Polymers and sol-gels represent a more ubiquitous choice of coating, however, with sensing of water vapor [173,262], isopropanol [263], ammonia [264], ethanol [265,266], and hexane vapor [266] having been demonstrated.…”

“…Optical microspheres are used extensively for temperature, humidity, and stress sensing. The working principle of microsphere resonators sensor is that the resonant wavelength or intensity of the output signal varies with the change in external environment .…”

“…Due to the ultra-high Q factor of optical microresonator, the potential resolution for humidity measurement is better than other fiber optic humidity sensors. For example, for humidity sensing for a longperiod fiber-grating device coated with SiO2 nanoparticles it is estimated the minimum detectable humidity change if of the order of 1% RH whereas for a microsphere coated with same SiO2 nanoparticles in spherical microresonator the minimum detectable change is estimated be around 0.003%RH [13].…”
