Spectral vegetation indices performance evaluated for Cholistan Desert

Abstract: To enhance the vegetation signal in remotely sensed data and provide an approximate measure of live green vegetation, a number of spectral vegetation indices have been developed to estimate biophysical parameters of vegetation. The sensitivity of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to the soil background and atmospheric effects has generated an increasing interest in the development of new indices. The modified soil-adjusted vegetation index (MSAVI) and its later revision, MSAVI2, are soil-adjust… Show more

“…Also, this index attributes low values to aquatic spaces in contrast to the DSWI and NDGI indexes. These observations are consistent with the results of previous works that showed the potential of MSAVI2 to map the state of the vegetation cover in arid environments [19,40]. The four indexes distinguish vegetated areas from bare soils.…”

“…[17] use the soil colour index to distinguish surface materials from soils according to the saturation of their colour. Chikhaoui et al For the chlorophyll activity: NDVI NDVI = (NIR − R) ∕ (NIR + R) [54] Used to evaluate the chlorophyll activity of plants and also for the monitoring of the state of the vegetation cover [37], (E. “…The normalized difference vegetation index, NDVI (Tucker and Sellers 1986;Gamon et al 1995;Silleos et al 2006), has been widely used during the past three decades to monitor vegetation growth, biomass production, total dry matter accumulation, canopy photosynthetic rate, stomatal resistance and evapotranspiration, and climate change (Diallo et al1991;Loss et al 1994;Santos and Negri 1997;Mo et al 2005;Hilker et al 2008;Vicente-Serrano et al 2010). Because the NDVI is highly sensitive to atmospheric effects the development of more adaptive vegetation indices (less sensitive to atmospheric effects) has received increasing attention from contemporary researchers (Jackson and Huete 1991;Haboudane et al 2004;Wang and Xu 2010;Ahmad 2012). Soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI) is a transformation technique that aims to minimize soil brightness influences on spectral vegetation indices involving red and near-infrared wavelengths such as NDVI and RVI (Huete 1988).…”

“…O Índice de Vegetação Ajustado para o Solo Modificado 2 (MSAVI2) é uma modificação dos índices de vegetação ajustados para o solo que busca resolver algumas limitações do NDVI quando aplicado em áreas com uma grande exposição da superfície do solo (Ahmad, 2012). No presente estudo, os valores ficaram na faixa de 0,34 a 0,85 e um comportamento muito parecido ao índice GEMI no canteiro 3 com valor menor de média, porém no dia 2 de outubro.…”
