Spectroscopic and Spectrometric Methods Used for the Screening of Certain Herbal Food Supplements Suspected of Adulteration

Abstract: Purpose: This study was carried out in order to find a reliable method for the fast detection of adulterated herbal food supplements with sexual enhancement claims. As some herbal products are advertised as "all natural", their "efficiency" is often increased by addition of active pharmaceutical ingredients such as PDE-5 inhibitors, which can be a real health threat for the consumer. Methodes: Adulterants, potentially present in 50 herbal food supplements with sexual improvement claims, were detected using 2 … Show more

“…The specific TDL absorption bands of the FTIR spectrum were recorded at 1675 cm −1 (properties of amides C=O 1646 cm −1 (C=C aromatic). The band of 1435 cm −1 relates to the stretching vibration C-N, and the band 746 cm −1 is representative of benzene [55]. In addition, it can be recognized from Figure 2b, which shows the characteristic DPX peaks of 4000, 3053, 2400, 1500 and 1100.…”

“…Observing and comparing characteristic peaks in MIRS and Raman spectroscopy is also effective means of identification due to the significant differences between PHPs and adulterated products ( Mateescu et al., 2017 ). Slimming herbal products, adulterated with illegal additives, were discriminated against by constructing synchronous and asynchronous maps ( Miao et al., 2017 ).…”

“…Other characteristic bands are considered: the stretching of the secondary amides N-H at 3300 cm −1 , the N-H bending vibration at 1650-1580 cm −1 , the asymmetrical stretch of S=O at 1359 cm −1 and the symmetrical one at 1172 cm −1 [ 35 ]. IR measurements have been widely used as a fast qualitative method for the analysis of adulteration of natural products (marketed herbal aphrodisiacs) with sildenafil [ 36 , 37 ] and also for the detection of counterfeit tablets [ 38 , 39 ].…”
