Spectroscopic characteristics and laser performance of Tm:CaYAlO4crystal

Abstract: The spectroscopic characteristics of Tm:CaYAlO 4 crystal were studied. Continuous wave laser operation at 2 µm was achieved with a 6 at.% Tm:CaYAlO 4 (Tm:CYA) crystal pumped by a fiber-coupled laser diode. The laser emits a maximum output power of 4.3 W with a slope efficiency as high as 46.7%. In addition, a wavelength tuning experiment on Tm:CYA crystal was performed showing the Tm:CYA laser could be continuously tuned from 1861 to 2046 nm using an intracavity CaF 2 prism, suggesting the potential of this cr… Show more

“…As many applications require laser emission at longer wavelengths—as will be clarified later on—some crystals [ 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 ] and mixed ceramics have attracted the interest of the scientific community because they are characterized by slightly broader and smoother gain spectra, which can be exploited in developing tunable and sub-100 fs laser systems [ 43 , 44 , 45 ].…”

“…Numerous techniques are used for wavelength tuning [7], such as etalon [8,9], prism [10], volume Bragg grating (VBG) [11], and birefringent filter [12][13][14]. Compared to other methods, etalon-based wavelength tuning was a common approach with the advantages of simple structure, low cost, and avoiding the necessity of polarized beams.…”
