“…As the cross‐section formula involves at the same time the branching ratio, the radiative lifetime, the emission intensity, and especially the wavelength to the fifth power, there has been a rebalancing of the respective intensities of the different emission bands with relative cross‐sections of order of magnitude 10 −20 cm 2 . Also, the eye‐safe emission cross‐section had the same order of magnitude with a maximum of 0.5 × 10 −20 cm 2 at ~1554 nm [29–31].…”

“…The peak σ abs is 0.34×10 -20 cm 2 at 981.3 nm and the corresponding absorption bandwidth (FWHM) is less than 1 nm and another broader peak is found at 971.1 nm (σ abs = 0.22×10 -20 cm 2 ). The absoprtion spectrum is less structured as compared to that for the (Er 0.07 Y 0.93 ) 2 O 3 ceramic due to the La 3+ codoping inducing additional inhomogeneous spectral broadening similarly to other "mixed" sesquioxde ceramics [28].…”

“…The criteria for the existence of solid-solutions between two parents are given by the Hume-Rothery rules. "Mixed" host matrices are attractive for doping with trivalent rare-earth ions (RE 3+ ) as they exhibit inhomogeneous spectral broadening of their absorption and emission bands [1,2]. It arises from the composition variation of the nearest-neighbor cationic coordination sphere (the ligand) of the RE 3+ ions.…”
