Abstract: Children with cleft palate made gains in production of canonical syllables and size of consonant inventories postsurgery; however, they continued to show deficits in production of stops and alveolar place features.

“…The U.S.-born group had more time following palate repair (mean, 14 months) than the IA group (mean, 8 months) prior to beginning the study at time 1. Jones et al (2003) described considerable variability in the rate of speech and language development following palate surgery for U.S.-born children. The extra time postsurgery for the U.S.-born group may have given them time to acquire more speech and language milestones than the IA children.…”

“…In fact, the IA group's performance at time 3 closely resembled the performance of the U.S.-born group at time 1. In the Jones et al (2003) study, the postsurgery assessment was completed approximately 5 months following surgery. In our study, 4 months elapsed between assessments, so the IA group took approximately 8 months to reach the speech-language milestones of the U.S.-born children.…”

“…Such problems may result in poor self-esteem and in impairment of psychosocial development of children (3). The relation between cleft type and speech in children with clefts continues to capture the attention of cleft palate teams, in part to gain a more complete understanding of the impact of cleft type on speech intelligibility and in part to improve the ability to assess and manage cleft palate children (4) Examination of the speech production abilities of children with cleft palate before and after palatal surgery provides a unique opportunity to see how the developing system restructures itself from both a motor and phonological perspective (5). One of the most commonly used methods to assess speech features of children with cleft lip and/or cleft palate is analysis of phonetic transcription by speech-language pathologists (6,7).…”
