Spherical analyzers and monochromators for resonant inelastic hard X-ray scattering: a compilation of crystals and reflections

Abstract: Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments require special sets of near-backscattering spherical diced analyzers and high-resolution monochromators for every distinct absorption-edge energy or emission line. For the purpose of aiding the design and planning of efficient RIXS experiments, a compilation of suitable crystal materials and viable reflections for hard X-rays, together with energy resolution and throughput information, is presented.

“…A single crystal of Sr 2 IrO 4 of 1 mm  1 mm size grown by the flux method was mounted in a displex closed-cycle cryostat and measured at 15 K. The RIXS measurements were performed using the MERIX spectrometer at the 30-ID beamline 43 of the Advanced Photon Source. X-rays were monochromatized to a bandwidth of 15 meV, and focused to have a beam size of 45(H)  30(V) mm 2 .…”

“…For this case the peak-peak slope error is about 33 12 W and peak power density 2.3 W/mm 2 . By applying Bragg angle at this energy and the slope error at the surface to the following equation [7], = (1) the resultant energy spread is about 1.5 eV. As a comparison the power absorption under the APS MBA lattice is also applied to the water cooling monochromator at the same energy.…”

“…Significant efforts have been made to improve the energy resolution to probe fine electronic structures, including Bragg angle close to back-scattering geometry and the use of diced crystals coupled with an area detector [274,277]. For RIXS using MERIX instruments, only a limited number of suitable analyzers have been established [278].…”
