Spherical MgCl2 Supported Iron Catalyst for Ethylene Polymerization: Effect of the Preparation Procedure on Catalyst Activity and the Morphology of Polyethylene Particles

Abstract: Summary: A new procedure was developed to support [(ArNC(Me))2C5H3N]FeCl2 (Ar2,4,6‐trimethylphenyl) on spherical MgCl2 for ethylene polymerization. The resultant catalysts showed ten times higher activity of the corresponding catalyst in homogeneous catalysis. The morphologies of polyethylene particles strongly depended on supported catalyst preparation procedure and polymerization conditions. In addition, the GPC measurements showed bimodal polyethylene for the homogeneous polymerization while mono‐modal po… Show more

“…On adsorption on the support surface, the structure of the LFeCl 2 molecule is mainly retained. Highly active supported catalysts were also prepared by supporting LFeCl 2 on magnesium chloride MgCl 2 , [13,14] Summary: The number of active centers (C P ) and propagation rate constants (k P ) for polymerization of ethylene with supported catalysts LFeCl 2 /SiO 2 , LFeCl 2 /Al 2 O 3 and LFeCl 2 /MgCl 2 (L ¼ 2,6-(2,6-(Me) 2 C 6 H 3 N CMe) 2 C 5 H 3 N), activated by an Al(i-Bu) 3 co-catalyst, were determined by a method of polymerization inhibition with radioactive 14 CO. In contrast to homogeneous systems based on LFeCl 2 , the supported catalysts are highly active and stable in ethylene polymerization at 70-80 8C.…”
