Spin-Orbit Interaction in Symmetric Wells with Two Subbands

Abstract: We investigate the spin-orbit (SO) interaction in two-dimensional electron gases in quantum wells with two subbands. From the 8 8 Kane model, we derive a new intersubband-induced SO term which resembles the functional form of the Rashba SO but is nonzero even in symmetric structures. This follows from the distinct parity of the confined states (even or odd) which obliterates the need for asymmetric potentials. We self-consistently calculate the new SO coupling strength for realistic wells and find it comparabl… Show more

“…As shown experimentally, the Rashba coupling strength can be tuned via proper gating of the structure 12,13 , which makes the Rashba interaction very appealing for potential technological applications involving spin control. More recently, yet a new type of spin-orbit interaction has been found in symmetric two-dimensional quantum structures with two subbands: the inter-subbandinduced spin-orbit coupling 14,15 . Interestingly, this new spin-orbit interaction gives rise to non-zero intrinsic spin Hall effect 16 .…”
