Spinal Cord Injury

Abstract: Spinal cord injury is a high‐cost, low‐incidence neurological disability. This condition has a significant impact on the individual, the family, health care service delivery systems, and society in general. Medical advancements have improved the likelihood of survival following spinal cord injury, and estimated life spans for persons with this condition now approach life expectancies of other people. Unfortunately, the costs associated with ongoing care and assistance escalate as financial support for these se… Show more

“…We adopt a dynamic, longitudinal view of QoL following SCI for this study (Elliott & Warren, ) to conceptualize the ways in which important predictor variables (such as functional impairment, pain, family satisfaction) may affect mediating variables (e.g., participation) that subsequently impact QoL (life satisfaction, health status). These outcomes are part of a ‘…dynamic and fluid process in which characteristics of the person and the injury, their social and interpersonal world…and the historical and temporal context interact to influence physical and psychological health’ (Elliott & Rivera, , p. 423).…”

“…bathing, dressing and feeding the injured person as well as providing bowel and bladder care) (Shewchuk, Richards & Elliott, 1998). Spinal caregivers tend to enter this new role without preparation or specialised training (Elliott & Rivera, 2003) and as such enter new, unfamiliar territory. Assuming this new and demanding caregiver role can represent an attempt to improve the quality of life of the injured person but this often comes at a cost to the caregiver who experiences role overload, financial strain, changes in health status, emotional problems and a lack of information (Donelan, Hill, Hoffman et al, 2002;Vitaliano, Zhang & Scanlan, 2003).…”
