Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) with Anatomically Guided (3D) Neural Targeting Shows Superior Chronic Axial Low Back Pain Relief Compared to Traditional SCS—LUMINA Study

Abstract: Our results suggest that 3D neural targeting SCS and its associated hardware flexibility provide effective treatment for both chronic leg and chronic axial low back pain that is significantly superior to traditional SCS.

“…Although a high proportion of patients preferred PB‐SS stimulation, having flexible systems with multiple waveforms available and precise pain‐targeting technology may help in the management of personalized therapy and tolerance to SCS. This consideration may be different in de novo patients, as reported in Refs.…”

“…Finally, simple bipoles were used in this study, but optimizing field shape may further improve therapy. Just as in paresthesia therapies, more advanced and flexible electrode combinations can significantly improve outcomes (57), so it can be speculated that the availability of such flexibility of electrode combinations may also further improve kilohertz frequency SCS outcomes.…”

“…The Precision Spectra SCS System (Boston Scientific Corporation, Valencia, CA, USA) delivers stimulation from an ETS or implantable pulse generator with up to 32 electrodes on leads that are implanted in the epidural space of the spinal canal. The device delivers different amounts of current to each of up to 32 electrodes, assigned by a 3D neural targeting algorithm .…”
