Spindt Field Emitter Arrays

Abstract: FIGURE 4.1. The Spindt microfabricated field emitter array. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SPINDT CATHODE 107program to develop microfabricated vacuum integrated circuits [3]. As a part of these activities he proposed a thin display tube based on matrix-addressed arrays of microfabricated field emitters -the field emission display, now commonly known as an FED [4]. This was the genesis of the VME technology that is presently being researched in essentially every industrial country in the world. As a part of Shoulder's… Show more

“…To confirm the deuterium peak was due to desorption and not gas phase field ionization of deuterium, the gas was evacuated to 10 9 Torr and additional spectra accumulated, as shown in Figure 6. Here there is only an initial slight decrease in the height of the atomic deuterium peak, consistent with desorption of deuterium from the tip surfaces.…”

“…A number of materials have reported low values of work function, including selected carbides, borides, nitrides, and carbonbased thin films. By integrating these materials into a high brightness electron source, it may be possible to increase the emission current by a factor of 100 or more as compared to a device fabricated from silicon or molybdenum [9][10][11][12][13][14].…”
