Spontaneous Activity in Primary Visual Cortex Relates to Visual Creativity

Abstract: Cognitive and neural processes underlying visual creativity have attracted substantial attention. The current research uses a critical time point analysis (CTPA) to examine how spontaneous activity in the primary visual area (PVA) is related to visual creativity. We acquired the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data of 16 participants at the resting state and during performing a visual creative synthesis task. According to the CTPA, we then classified spontaneous activity in the PVA into critical t… Show more

“… 62 Better visual creativity was correlated with stronger resting-state FC between the visual network, default mode, and frontoparietal networks. 61 , 63 Although our studies focused on infants, it is plausible that the similar mechanisms are present at some level or are developing in infants. We found that the inter-network connectivity between the visual and DMN exhibited the largest weight, followed by visual-FPN, suggesting potential functional alterations governed by the inter-network connectivity among the three networks in POE infants.…”

“…While inter-network connections serve less specialized and complex brain functions when compared to intra-network connections, 58 , 59 inter-network communications have been regarded as essential to maintain healthy executive function. 58 , 59 In particular, growing evidence from adult studies 60 , 61 has supported that the intrinsic neural connections between visual and default mode networks play a key role in visual mental imagery, which is the basis of a variety of high-level cognitive functions. 62 Better visual creativity was correlated with stronger resting-state FC between the visual network, default mode, and frontoparietal networks.…”

“…We employed a recently developed method to measure the dynamic changes in lateralisation of hemispheres, which used a sliding time window based on a global signal to capture the time‐varying lateralisation architecture (Wu et al, 2022 ). Compared with the traditional method of measuring lateralisation using SFC (Liu et al, 2009 ), this new method took full advantage of the abundant dynamic properties in spontaneous brain activity, which were also essential for exploring creative idea generation (Agnoli et al, 2018 ; Wang et al, 2021 ). In this study, 12‐network parcellation with 360 bilateral parcels was applied to define the nodes (Glasser et al, 2016 ).…”
